About the Author of Memoirs of a Geisha, Arthur Golden

Arthur Golden, the author of Memoirs of a Geisha, was fascinated by the life of geisha that he spent 10 years researching the life of geisha before he wrote Memoirs of a Geisha, the 1998 bestseller book about Geisha.

Arthur Golden 's novel, Memoirs of a Geisha, brought back some interest to the way of life of geisha. Nowadays, geisha 's way of life and their very existence is at risk. Many Japanese have not heard of Arthur Golden 's book Memoirs of a Geisha until the recent featured film Memoirs of a Geisha movie which is based on Arthur Golden 's Memoirs of a Geisha book.

Geisha, once flourish in number and played major roles in Japanese society, are now scarce. True geisha artists are rare and many are using the name geisha loosely. Geisha 's roles in the modern society are minimal. Most of the geisha in the Memoirs of a Geisha movie are either apprentices geisha maiko or just actors. These geisha in the Memoirs of a Geisha film took very little time to dress and put on geisha makeup, very different from true geisha.

Arthur Golden, the author of Memoirs of a Geisha, was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was educated at Harvard College, where he received a degree in art history and specialized in Japanese art. In 1980 he received an M.A. in Japanese history from Columbia University. While at Columbia university, he also learned Mandarin Chinese. He spent a summer at Beijing University and then worked in Tokyo. After Arthur Golden returned to the United States, he earned another M.A. His second M.A. is in English from Boston University. He now lives in Brookline, Massachusetts, with his wife and two children.

Geisha 's retaliation against Arthur Golden

Mineko Iwasaki, the world's most famous geisha, was so furious because Arthur Golden published his book Memoirs of a Geisha. Arthur Golden was supposedly inspired by the life of this particular geisha, Mineko Iwasaki that he wrote his Memoirs of a Geisha book. Mineko Iwasaki was angry because of the way geisha 's way of life was portrayed in Arthur Golden 's Memoirs of a Geisha book, added to the fact that she claimed Arthur Golden betrayed her confidence. Mineko Iwasaki then published the Real Memoirs of a Geisha. This Real Memoirs of a Geisha was the second time the press had a field day. The first was when a geisha revealed her affairs with Prime Minister Sosuke Uno.
